Newton police Lt. T. Walton, who becomes Harvey County sheriff next month, has taken an indirect path to the office.

Walton, whose voice hints at his Long Island, N.Y., roots, came west in the fall of 1969 to attend Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina.

He worked in the mobile home and recreational vehicle industry in Harvey County before he became a Newton police detective.

When he ran for sheriff this past year, he became the first Democratic candidate for the office to win since 1972.

“He’ll make a good sheriff,” said Byron Motter, who was Harvey County sheriff from 1990 to 2007.

Sedgwick County District Judge Clark Owens on Wednesday denied a motion by lawyers for Wichita abortion provider George Tiller to dismiss his criminal case.

The ruling prompted a lawyer for former Kansas Attorney General Phill Kline to say Kline’s investigation of Tiller had “once again been vindicated.”

Tiller will go to trial March 16 on 19 misdemeanor counts related to how he obtained second opinions for late-term abortions.

“We are continuing forward with the case and preparing for trial,” said Ashley Anstaett, spokeswoman for Attorney General Steve Six, whose office is prosecuting the case.

Dan Monnat, a lawyer on Tiller’s defense team, said the ruling won’t prevent the doctor from prevailing at trial.
