Kansas court won’t let Mulvane endorse turnpike casino
28 of June 2009
The Kansas Court of Appeals has denied a motion by Mulvane that would have allowed it to endorse casino proposals for its turnpike exit during the upcoming round of casino bidding in Sumner County.
Mulvane had sought suspension of a Sumner County district judge’s ruling that nullified the string annexation it used to bring the site near the Kansas Turnpike into the city. It is appealing that ruling.
The January ruling by judge Scott McQuin meant that only the Sumner County Commission would have the authority to endorse casino projects at that exit.
The commission rejected two casino projects for the exit during the first round of bidding while endorsing two for the Wellington turnpike exit.
New casino proposals are due to the Kansas Lottery by April 1. Endorsements by local governments are required before prospective casino managers can sign contracts with the lottery.

Buchanan a finalist for city manager
26 of June 2009
Sedgwick County Manager William Buchanan is one of six finalists vying to become Wichita’s next city manager, sources involved in the selection process confirmed Thursday.
Many have mentioned Buchanan as a likely prospect, but he has not confirmed his interest publicly.
He did not return a call from The Eagle on Thursday afternoon. He has, however, discussed the possibility with county commissioners.
“He did talk to me about it, and he did that before he submitted his application,” County Commissioner Gwen Welshimer said.
“I think a good way to look at it is that he’s looking at the higher salary. And Sedgwick County, right now, we’re trying to cut back.”
