31 of October 2009
TOPEKA — Looming cuts to this year’s budget and less money for the next year could translate into fewer meals for seniors, larger class sizes in public schools and deeper cuts to state programs which have already go through several reductions.
Under current revenue projections, lawmakers could be faced with cutting more than $100 million from the current year’s budget, which started July 1, when they return to the Statehouse in January.
The actual number is likely to be much more, said Rep. Jason Watkins, R-Wichita, vice chairman of the House Appropriations Committee. He estimated the cuts would probably come to

Darwin billboard in Wichita gets mixed reactions from churches
29 of October 2009
A billboard advertisement in northwest Wichita that urges people to “Praise Darwin” and “Evolve Beyond Belief” is drawing mixed reactions from local congregation leaders.
The billboard, which went up Tuesday at 21st and Tyler Road, is paid for by the Freedom from Religion Foundation, which describes itself as an educational group working for the separation of state and church.
Annie Laurie Gaylor, co-president of the Wisconsin-based group, said the billboard is a way to celebrate Darwin’s 200th birthday and the 150th anniversary of his work “On the Origin of Species.”
“People are always being told to ‘praise the Lord,’ ” Gaylor said. “Well, we should be praising human accomplishments, and who more important to science than Darwin for explaining the origin of the human species?”
Most scientists and courts that have ruled on the matter say that overwhelming evidence backs Darwin’s explanation of the origin and evolution of species — including humans — by natural selection.
